近年来，有越来越多的学者开始从事华北地区的研究，《长城内外：社会史视野下的制度、族群与区域开发》就是华北区域社会史研究起步阶段的一项成果。该书从生活在长城两侧的人群出发，观察历史上与长城有关的制度、事件如何影响到这些人群的生活，注意这些人群的生活如何与上述制度、事件共同构成了地方社会的结构。书中诸文多以明代为讨论的中心，关注自明代开始长城沿线两侧出现的新变化，虽然讨论的是长城沿线的不同区域，侧重的问题也不尽相同，但均揭示了这一横向地带的某些共同特点。
How to Improve the Studies of Social History of North China Region——Preface of The Great Wrall From Inside and Outside:Institutions,Ethnic Groups and Regional Exploration in the Perspective of Social History

Abstract:
More and more scholars engage in the studies on the regional social history of North China in recent years.The book,The Great Wrall From Inside and Outside:Institutions,Ethnic Groups and Regional Exploration in the Perspective of Social History,is one product of the preliminary study among them.Starting from the groups living at two sides of the Great Wall,this book tries to find how the insti-tutions and events concerning the Great Wall in history influence the life of these groups.Contributions in this book mostly take the Ming Dynasty as their focus,and pay attention to the new changes along the Great Wall since Ming.They discuss the different regions along the Great Wall and raise different ques-tions.However,it shows some common features of this horizontal zone.
